The 6 Stages of Cannabis Growth

Understanding each stage is essential for providing the right environment, nutrients, and care at the right time.

01
Germination
3–10 days

The seed cracks open and a taproot emerges. Keep seeds moist and warm (70–85°F) in darkness.

Light
18 hrs (once sprouted)
Water
Mist lightly
Nutrients
None needed
Key Tips:
  • Use the paper towel method or plant directly in starter cubes
  • Maintain 70–85°F temperature
  • Keep humidity at 70–90%
  • Avoid direct light until seedling emerges
02
Seedling
2–3 weeks

First true leaves (fan leaves) develop. The plant establishes its root system and begins photosynthesis.

Light
18 hrs/day
Water
Every 2–3 days
Nutrients
Very light (¼ strength)
Key Tips:
  • Provide 18 hours of light per day
  • Keep humidity at 60–70%
  • Water sparingly — overwatering is the #1 mistake
  • Use small containers (1–2 gallon)
03
Vegetative
3–16 weeks

Rapid growth phase. The plant builds its structure, branches, and leaf mass before flowering.

Light
18 hrs/day
Water
Every 1–2 days
Nutrients
High nitrogen (N-P-K: 3-1-2)
Key Tips:
  • Maintain 18/6 light schedule for indoor grows
  • Train plants with LST, topping, or FIMing
  • Increase nitrogen-heavy nutrients
  • Transplant to larger containers as needed
  • Keep humidity at 40–70%
04
Pre-Flower
1–2 weeks

The plant shows its sex. Males develop pollen sacs; females show white pistils. Remove males immediately.

Light
12 hrs/day
Water
Every 1–2 days
Nutrients
Transition to bloom
Key Tips:
  • Switch to 12/12 light cycle for indoor grows
  • Identify and remove male plants
  • Begin transitioning to bloom nutrients
  • Reduce nitrogen, increase phosphorus
05
Flowering
8–11 weeks

Buds develop and swell. Trichomes form and mature. This is the most critical phase for potency and yield.

Light
12 hrs/day
Water
Every 1–2 days
Nutrients
High P-K (N-P-K: 1-3-2)
Key Tips:
  • Maintain 12/12 light cycle strictly
  • Keep humidity below 50% to prevent mold
  • Use high-phosphorus, high-potassium nutrients
  • Flush with plain water 1–2 weeks before harvest
  • Monitor trichomes with a jeweler's loupe
06
Harvest
1–3 days

Trichomes are milky/amber, pistils are 70–90% orange/red. Cut, trim, and begin drying.

Light
N/A
Water
Flush 1–2 weeks prior
Nutrients
None (flush period)
Key Tips:
  • Harvest when 70–90% of pistils are amber/red
  • Milky trichomes = peak THC; amber = more CBN/relaxing
  • Harvest in the dark or early morning for best terpenes
  • Wet trim or dry trim based on preference
