Recreational Cannabis

Adults 21+ can legally purchase and possess cannabis from licensed retailers. Washington has a state-run licensing system with strict regulations on production, processing, and retail.

Medical Cannabis

Medical marijuana was legal from 1998-2016. The medical program was merged into the recreational system in 2016. Medical patients can register for tax exemptions and higher possession limits.

Home Cultivation Prohibited

Washington is one of the few recreational states that does not allow home growing for adult-use consumers. This policy is designed to maintain state control over the cannabis supply chain.
