The method by which you consume cannabis determines almost everything about your experience: how quickly effects begin, how intense they are, how long they last, and what percentage of the cannabinoids actually reach your bloodstream. Understanding the pharmacokinetics of each consumption method is the most important piece of knowledge any cannabis consumer can have.

Smoking flower is the oldest and most studied method. Bioavailability — the percentage of THC that actually enters your bloodstream — ranges from 2% to 56%, with an average around 30%. The enormous range reflects differences in inhalation technique, breath-hold duration, and the combustion process itself. Onset is rapid: effects begin within minutes and peak at 15–30 minutes. Duration is typically 2–3 hours. The primary downside is combustion byproducts — carbon monoxide, tar, and other toxicants that are not present in the cannabis itself but are created by burning it.

Vaporizing flower or concentrates eliminates combustion while preserving inhalation delivery. Bioavailability is similar to smoking (10–35%) but without the combustion toxicants. Onset and duration are essentially identical to smoking. Terpene preservation is significantly better at lower vaporization temperatures (170–185°C), which is why many experienced users prefer vaporizers for flavor and effect quality. Concentrates vaporized at high temperatures (dabbing) deliver very high doses very quickly — appropriate only for experienced, high-tolerance users.

Edibles are the most pharmacokinetically complex consumption method. When THC is ingested, it passes through the gastrointestinal tract and is absorbed into the portal circulation, where it travels to the liver before entering systemic circulation. In the liver, delta-9 THC is converted to 11-hydroxy-THC — a metabolite that is more potent, crosses the blood-brain barrier more readily, and has a longer half-life than delta-9 THC. This is why edibles feel different from inhaled cannabis: you're experiencing a different compound.

Edible bioavailability is highly variable (4–20%) and depends on fat content of the product, individual digestive factors, and whether you've eaten recently. Onset is 30 minutes to 2 hours. Duration is 4–8 hours, sometimes longer. The delayed onset is the primary cause of edible overconsumption — people don't feel effects after 45 minutes and take more, then both doses hit simultaneously. The cardinal rule of edibles: start with 2.5–5mg THC, wait at least 2 hours before considering more.

Sublingual tinctures and oils bypass first-pass liver metabolism when held under the tongue for 60–90 seconds before swallowing. Bioavailability is higher than edibles (13–19%) and onset is faster (15–45 minutes). Duration is intermediate between inhalation and edibles (3–5 hours). Tinctures are the preferred method for medical patients who need precise, consistent dosing — the dose can be measured exactly, and the effects are more predictable than either inhalation or edibles.

Topicals — creams, balms, and lotions — deliver cannabinoids through the skin to local tissue. They do not produce psychoactive effects because cannabinoids applied topically do not reach the bloodstream in significant concentrations. They are effective for localized pain, inflammation, and skin conditions. Transdermal patches are different: they are designed to deliver cannabinoids into the bloodstream through the skin, producing systemic effects. Onset for patches is 1–2 hours; duration can be 8–12 hours.

Suppositories have the highest bioavailability of any non-inhalation method (up to 80%) and bypass first-pass metabolism entirely. They are primarily used by medical patients who cannot use other methods — those with severe nausea, swallowing difficulties, or who need high doses without psychoactive effects. Rectal administration of THC produces less psychoactivity than oral administration at equivalent doses, making it useful for patients who need high cannabinoid doses for pain or other conditions.

The practical takeaway: for immediate relief, inhalation (vaping preferred over smoking) is most effective. For sustained effects over many hours, edibles or patches are better. For precise medical dosing, tinctures offer the best control. For localized pain without psychoactivity, topicals are ideal. Understanding these differences allows you to choose the right tool for your specific need rather than defaulting to whatever method you started with.
