Foundation Science

The Endocannabinoid System

To understand cannabinoids, you must first understand the system they interact with. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex cell-signaling system present in all vertebrates — and it was discovered because of cannabis research.

CB1 Receptors

Concentrated in the brain and central nervous system. Responsible for psychoactive effects of THC. Target of THCV's appetite-suppressing antagonism.

CB2 Receptors

Found primarily in immune tissues and peripheral organs. Mediates anti-inflammatory effects of CBD, CBG, and CBN. No psychoactive effects when activated.

Endocannabinoids

The body's own cannabinoids — anandamide (the "bliss molecule") and 2-AG. THC mimics anandamide; CBD prevents its breakdown by inhibiting FAAH enzyme.

The Entourage Effect

The synergistic interaction between cannabinoids and terpenes that produces superior therapeutic outcomes compared to isolated compounds. The scientific basis for full spectrum products.
