CBG is the non-psychoactive precursor from which THC, CBD, and CBC are all synthesized in the cannabis plant. Present in low concentrations in mature plants, CBG has demonstrated remarkable anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, neuroprotective, and anti-cancer properties in preclinical research.
Cannabigerol (CBG) is often called the "mother cannabinoid" because it is the chemical precursor from which all other major cannabinoids are synthesized. CBGA (the acidic form) is converted by plant enzymes into THCA, CBDA, and CBCA — the precursors to THC, CBD, and CBC respectively. By the time cannabis reaches maturity, most CBGA has been converted, leaving only trace amounts of CBG (typically <1%).
CBG is non-psychoactive and has a distinct pharmacological profile from both THC and CBD. It acts as a partial agonist at CB1 and CB2 receptors, an alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist, a 5-HT1A receptor antagonist, and a TRPV1 channel activator. This multi-target profile underlies its diverse therapeutic potential.
The most compelling preclinical research on CBG involves inflammatory bowel disease. A 2013 study in Biochemical Pharmacology found that CBG significantly reduced inflammation and nitric oxide production in mouse models of IBD, outperforming CBD in some measures. Human clinical trials are now underway.
CBG has demonstrated potent antibacterial activity, particularly against MRSA. A 2020 study in ACS Infectious Diseases found CBG was the most active cannabinoid tested against MRSA, disrupting bacterial cell membranes and inhibiting biofilm formation. This has attracted significant pharmaceutical interest.
Neuroprotection is another area of active CBG research. Studies in Huntington's disease mouse models showed CBG protected striatal neurons from toxicity and improved motor deficits. CBG's ability to stimulate neurogenesis and reduce neuroinflammation positions it as a candidate for neurodegenerative disease research.
