Cannabinol
The sleep cannabinoid — a natural THC degradation product with emerging sedative and analgesic research.
CBN is formed when THC oxidizes and degrades over time. It is mildly psychoactive, significantly less potent than THC, and has attracted intense research interest for its sedative, analgesic, and antibacterial properties. CBN is the cannabinoid most associated with the sedative effects of aged cannabis.
Cannabinol (CBN) was actually the first cannabinoid to be isolated, extracted from red oil of cannabis by Thomas Wood in 1896 — decades before THC or CBD were identified. It forms naturally as THC oxidizes and degrades when cannabis is exposed to heat, light, or air over time.
CBN is a partial agonist at both CB1 and CB2 receptors, with significantly lower binding affinity than THC. This partial agonism produces mild psychoactive effects — roughly one-quarter the potency of THC — along with sedative properties that have made it the most sought-after cannabinoid for sleep formulations.
The "CBN for sleep" narrative is supported by both anecdotal evidence and emerging research, though the clinical evidence base is less developed than for THC or CBD. A 2021 Steep Hill study found that 5mg CBN was equivalent to 10mg diazepam (Valium) for sedation — though this study has not been peer-reviewed. More rigorous clinical trials are underway.
Beyond sleep, CBN has demonstrated antibacterial activity against MRSA strains resistant to multiple antibiotics, appetite stimulation comparable to THC, and analgesic effects in animal models. Its anti-inflammatory properties are being investigated for conditions including arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.
CBN is found in very low concentrations in fresh cannabis (typically <1%) but increases significantly in aged or improperly stored material. Commercial CBN products are typically produced by oxidizing CBD or THC, or through direct extraction from aged cannabis. The most effective sleep products combine CBN with CBD and/or THC for synergistic effects.
Legal Gray Area
CBN derived from hemp (≤0.3% THC) exists in a legal gray area. The DEA has not explicitly scheduled CBN, but its derivation from THC creates regulatory uncertainty. State laws vary.
