Chronic Pain

The #1 reason Americans use medical cannabis โ€” backed by the strongest evidence base.

About Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is defined as pain lasting more than 3 months that persists beyond normal tissue healing. It affects an estimated 50 million Americans and is the single most common reason patients seek medical cannabis authorization in every legal state.

The endocannabinoid system plays a direct role in pain modulation. CB1 receptors in the spinal cord and brain suppress pain signaling, while CB2 receptors in peripheral tissues reduce inflammation. Both THC and CBD interact with these pathways through distinct mechanisms.

A landmark 2017 National Academies of Sciences report concluded there is "conclusive or substantial evidence" that cannabis is effective for chronic pain in adults โ€” the highest evidence rating the committee assigned to any cannabis indication. Since then, dozens of additional clinical trials have reinforced this finding.

Cannabis is particularly effective for neuropathic pain (nerve damage), which responds poorly to opioids and NSAIDs. Studies show 30โ€“40% reductions in pain intensity with vaporized cannabis, comparable to first-line neuropathic agents like gabapentin.

Common Symptoms

Persistent aching or burning sensation
Sharp or shooting pain
Muscle stiffness and tension
Fatigue and sleep disruption
Mood changes and depression
Reduced mobility and function
Hypersensitivity to touch or temperature

How Cannabis Helps

Cannabis activates CB1 receptors in the spinal cord and brain to suppress pain signals, reduces neuroinflammation via CB2 receptors, and modulates the emotional component of pain through limbic system pathways. THC provides direct analgesic effects while CBD reduces inflammation and enhances THC's pain-relieving properties without increasing psychoactivity.

Key Facts
