About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting 1 million Americans. It causes demyelination of nerve fibers, leading to spasticity, pain, fatigue, bladder dysfunction, and cognitive impairment. Spasticity โ€” painful muscle stiffness and spasms โ€” affects 80% of MS patients and is one of the most debilitating symptoms.

Sativex (nabiximols), a 1:1 THC:CBD oromucosal spray, is approved for MS spasticity in over 30 countries including Canada, the UK, and most of Europe. Multiple Phase III clinical trials demonstrated significant reductions in spasticity scores, pain, and sleep disturbance. This represents the most internationally validated cannabis medicine in existence.

The endocannabinoid system is deeply involved in MS pathology. CB1 and CB2 receptors are upregulated in MS lesions, and endocannabinoid levels are elevated in the cerebrospinal fluid of MS patients โ€” suggesting the body is attempting to use its own cannabinoid system to manage the disease.

Beyond spasticity, cannabis addresses multiple MS symptoms: neuropathic pain (very common in MS), bladder dysfunction, sleep disruption, and depression. The multi-symptom efficacy of cannabis is particularly valuable in MS, where patients often manage 5โ€“10 concurrent symptoms.

How Cannabis Helps

THC and CBD act on CB1 receptors in the spinal cord and motor cortex to reduce spasticity and muscle spasms. CB2 receptor activation reduces neuroinflammation and may slow demyelination. Cannabis addresses neuropathic pain through CB1-mediated suppression of pain signaling. Bladder dysfunction improves through CB1/CB2 modulation of bladder smooth muscle and sensory nerves.
